The Beginning

A missionary movement born in Lyon

The Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith was established by Pauline Marie Jaricot in Lyon, France, in 1822.

Pauline became deeply conscious of the needs of missionaries and missionary communities. She gathered friends and encouraged a simple but powerful form of missionary cooperation: prayer joined with regular personal sacrifice and financial support for the missions.

The movement encouraged the faithful to see themselves as part of the missionary work of the whole Church rather than as distant observers of it.

Our Mission in Sri Lanka

Propagation of the Faith in Sri Lanka

The Society is established in Sri Lanka as part of the worldwide missionary work of the Church.

A major expression of its mission is the annual celebration of World Mission Sunday, together with programmes that encourage missionary awareness and cooperation among the faithful.

According to the PMS Sri Lanka handbook, missionary contributions associated with this work help respond to diocesan needs, including catechetical work, special diocesan projects and pastoral communication.
